Laurie Boyle Crompton Guest Post

Hello! Today I get the pleasure of hosting the author of Pretty In Punxsutawney, Laurie Boyle Crompton as she gives us a few things you may not know about her book. So lets take a look!

10 Things you don’t know about Pretty in Punxsutawney

1.     Pretty in Punxsutawney’s main character, Andie, is almost as obsessed with movies as the author of the book.

2.     Andie uses many 80s movie references, but readers don’t need to be familiar with 80s movies to come along for the ride!

3.     The author did a ton of research on 80s movies which follows her method of picking fun topics and then constructing a reason to research them. So far, she’s found a need to ‘research’ superhero comics, reality television, rock climbing and graffiti art. Her next book, Freaky in Fresno, involves a cool drive-in movie theater so obviously, she and her family had to go to a ton of drive-in movies! (see number 1)

4.     Pretty in Punxsutawney was sold to Blink/HarperCollins over two years before it was released because sometimes publishing can move very very slowly!

5.     And sometimes publishing can move very very quickly! The author’s next book with Blink, Freaky in Fresno, was going through final edits at the exact same time Pretty in Punxsutawney was released.

6.     Working on a book’s long awaited release at the same time as final edits on a different book can create a stress storm similar to warm fronts and cold fronts coming together. The introverted time necessary to edit one book collides with the extroverted time spent promoting the other book, resulting in a stress downpour that can make an author’s eye twitch for a full week.

7.     The giant pink leather couch Andie’s mom brings home from the thrift store in the book was inspired by a couch the author’s sister found on the curb where she lives in Portland, Oregon. It was much too big for her sister’s living room and took over her house, but who can resist a giant pink leather couch?

8.     That pink couch also unlocked the magical element at the heart of Pretty in Punxsutawney! But you’ll need to read the book to find out exactly how.

9.     PiP was written entirely from the author’s couch, which is neither pink leather nor overly huge, yet which seems to hold a special magic just the same. The couch is usually shared by three adorable canines named Lucy, Quentin and Baxter who love to hog the couch pillows. Also, Baxter farts in his sleep so basically one could say the author’s writing couch is filled with magic and dog farts. (see photo)

10.  Andie’s inner-monologue as she goes through her various adventures day after day proves that no matter how bleak and horrible, finding a way to laugh about our circumstances brings us hope. And with hope we can get through anything, even high school!

Andie is the type of girl who always comes up with the perfect thing to say…after it’s too late to say it. She’s addicted to romance movies—okay, all movies—but has yet to experience her first kiss. After a move to Punxsutawney, PA, for her senior year, she gets caught in an endless loop of her first day at her new school, reliving those 24 hours again and again.
Convinced the curse will be broken when she meets her true love, Andie embarks on a mission: infiltrating the various cliques to find the one boy who can break the spell. What she discovers along the way is that people who seem completely different can often share the very same hopes, dreams, and hang-ups. And that even a day that has been lived over and over can be filled with unexpected connections and plenty of happy endings.
